Sime Darby’s Terberg Tractors Malaysia Celebrates 1,000th Alexander Dennis Unit

Kuala Lumpur, 15 March 2016 - Sime Darby Industrial, a leading distributor of premium heavy equipment, recently celebrated the production of its 1,000th unit of Alexander Dennis bus chassis via its joint venture subsidiary Terberg Terminal Tractors Sdn Bhd (TTM).

TTM undertook a symbolic handover of the 1,000th unit to Alexander Dennis Ltd (ADL), with the British High Commissioner as the guest of honour at its manufacturing facility in Pasir Gudang. Also present on behalf of Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd was its Managing Director, Mr Chong Kwea Seng.

Commenting on the auspicious occasion, Mr Chong said, “The finished ADL buses are exported throughout the region to markets like Hong Kong and New Zealand where public transportation is world-class. We are also proud to play a role in expanding the public transportation footprint in Malaysia; ADL buses are a mainstay in Prasarana Malaysia Berhad’s public transportation operations, with double decker buses plying high-traffic routes in Klang Valley.”

“We have been receiving a very encouraging response from the market with regards to the ADL line of buses and look forward to increasing our manufacturing capacity in tandem with the demand. We fully support the government’s objective in making public transportation more accessible and environmentally sustainable.”

Pioneer of both low floor double deck and midi bus concepts, ADL has brought this expertise to Malaysia with the successful launch of a fleet of lightweight, fuel efficient, and environmentally friendly Euro compliant vehicles.

“We are honoured to be chosen by Alexander Dennis, the fastest growing bus and coach builder in Western Europe and we are proud to be the manufacturer of choice in South East Asia with more than a thousand chassis units under our belt,” added Mr Chong.

Vicki Treadell, British High Commissioner to Malaysia (centre), and Paul Davies, Director & General Manager Asia Pacific, Alexander Dennis Asia Pacific (second from right) at the handover ceremony in Pasir Gudang.

Paul Davies, Director & General Manager Asia Pacific, Alexander Dennis Asia Pacific noted: “We are proud to be celebrating this milestone achievement with the production of the 1,000th chassis from Sime Darby’s Terberg Tractors Malaysia facility. Since we entered into partnership with TTM in 2012, we have been impressed by their expertise, skillset and commitment to help ADL grow in the Asia Pacific region.”

“At ADL, we have experience with build alliances and joint ventures around the world from North America to New Zealand as this approach is a key strategic piece of our business model facilitating rapid deployment into new markets.  However to make this work, it is critical to our mutual success to select a partner who shares our vision of delivering class-leading, reliable vehicles with maximum uptime.  TTM has proven to us that they do, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with them in the future as we bring fuel efficient, accessible vehicles to the most congested cities in the region,” concluded Mr Davies.

The deal with ADL was signed in June 2012 and TTM began manufacturing the first order of 136 units bound for New Zealand. In July 2015, a total of 216 units of Enviro200 were built at its manufacturing facility in Pasir Gudang, Johor. TTM has since been aggressively expanding its capabilities to cater to the rising demand.

“On the business front, we are confident of continuing to expand our collaboration with ADL in the coming months. There are strong growth prospects in Asia Pacific region. We look forward to strengthening our manufacturing capabilities to cater to the rising demand,” he said.
